KOSTROMA
Being nearly the same age as Moscow, Kostroma played important role in Russian history as the birthplace of the Romanovs Dynasty. The Ipatievsky Monastery is famous as a place where in 1613 the ’boyars’ blessed the young Mikhail Romanov to become the Tsar of Russia. Kostroma has preserved its peculiar image of a Russian city. Buildings of the Trade Galleries are the pride of Kostroma ranked among the best architectural monuments in Russia. Kostroma is also famous for its Fire-watch Tower (the symbol of the town) and ancient churches like the Church of the Resurrection with the 16th century iconostasis and the Epiphany-Anatasian Convent containing the holy "Federovskaya" icon of the Virgin believed to perform miracles. Today Kostroma is a picturesque city with strong historical atmosphere. Not far from the town there is a unique elk-farm. While visiting it you will have a pleasure to feed tamed animals out of your hand. You will have a unique chance to see baby elks (during May-September period) and to taste elk milk that is of great curative value.
